Nite Hawk Gravity Park

Grande Prairie, Alberta 2007

Task: Trail Crew received a phone call in April, 2006 from the general manager of the Nite Hawk Ski Area. Trail Crew was contracted to design and construct a mountain bike park consisting of 3 trails of varying difficulty and a skills park. The timelines for this project were extremely tight as the park was slated to open by the beginning of August, 2007. That winter Grande Prairie saw almost 7ft of snow. The work could not commence until the snow had melted. By late May we had only been able to complete our preliminary design work. Once the weather started to go our way Trail Crew spent the next two months working around the clock to bring the park into existence by the proposed opening date. Trail Crew constructed with its crew during the day, then worked in the evenings with a local crew of volunteers. The volunteer work crews recorded over 1500 hours of man time with just a small handful of recruits. The Nite Hawk Gravity Park opened its lift service for the first time Aug 4, 2007.

Result: Nite Hawk Gravity Park is now a full season lift access operation. The bike park is a new source of revenue for the hill and surrounding area. It has helped grow a community around the sport of downhill mountain biking. Year round operations have been a help to the resort as it allow Nite Hawk to keep more year round staffing, a problem small ski resorts face when hiring seasonal employees.
